Book Review: Home of the Brave

Home of the Brave by Katherine Applegate

This book tapped into my love affair with books written verse.  Applegate tells the story of Kek, a young refugee from the Sudan.  Of all places he is relocated to Minnesota to be with his also recently relocated aunt and cousin.  There he experiences many firsts, especially when it involved the weather and which appliances are used for what purpose.  Kek's beautifully written story can sometimes break your heart, but the book leaves you with tears of joy.  Overall, I loved this book.  However, it feeds into my interests.  I love prose, Africa, and stories of immigrants.

After such a winter,
summer comes like a present with a bow.
Summer is ice cream and skateboards
and sweet grass under your
free toes.
